Mary`s Cafe in Strawn

Mary's is THE BEST place to go for chicken fried steak! You get a huge portion of meat tender enough to cut with a fork, your choice of potato, salad, Texas toast and gravy. It is all delicious and everyone is friendly with fast service. Looking forward to my next visit already!

Mary's is always great. If you're going to mary's it's probably for a chicken fried steak. If not get a burger. The large is the size of a platter dish. Most of the time the small is enough to feel full and the medium is enough to get you stuffed. The large is enough to cause a heart attack, but what a way to go. Gravy is home made and comes in a large bowl. The beer is better in a "goblet"

"Best Chicken-fried Steak in Texas" is a tall order, but Mary's lives up to the expectation. Their quality of steak would be delicious even without the breading and frying. Gravy served on the side lets diners choose to drown or dip according to taste. Get the combination plate and you'll have enchiladas with salad in addition to the "small" chicken fried steak. Definitely enough food for two! Iced tea is the perfect drink to accompany the meal, and Mary's iced tea is excellent.

Best chicken fried steak. Hand battered and tenderized steak, homemade gravy and mashed potatoes. If you go away hungry that's a personal problem. They have HUGE pie slices too.

great food that reminds you of home comfort cooking. we stopped here on our drive back home and the place was surprisingly semi packed. the hush puppies were top notch, but I didn't care for the locals eyeballing me the entire time. it's rude to stare when I'm trying to eat!

I visited this place with a group of bikers. This was my first visit but it definitely seems like a popular biker destination. I had the chicken-fried steak and it was really good. Not the best I had ever had but definitely worth getting. Also, the small size chicken fried steak is still pretty large and will be enough for most people.

I've been going to Mary's Cafe for years, and this visit was like the others. Great (obviously) chicken fried steak and just overall great food. My family heritage is from Gordon and Thurber, so I try to eat here every time I am visiting gravesites to see my grandparents, great grandparents and great-great grandparents. Usually a couple of times a year on visits from North Carolina.

The food was delicious and the serving size was enormous. We had the chicken fried steak and chicken fingers. The chicken fingers were more like half chicken breasts and more than we could eat. I also had a slice of chocolate pie which was fantastic.

Update: We tried the 2 lb Texas burger. It is really just a novelty as the bun is not sized to the patty and it was cooked beyond well-done. Very dry. Stick to the delicious pan-fried steak.There are few places that serve a decent pan fried chicken fried steak. Most deep fry rather than pan fry. Pan-frying provides a much heartier flavor to the crust. Almost a char. Super friendly service and huge portions make this a great value. The fries and salad were a bit limp. Restroom needed to be cleaned.

The most amazing mashed potatoes & chicken fried steak, corn and garlic toast

A bit over rated but the servings are huge and you definately get your money's worth. The chicken fried steak was too greasy and tasted like it was fried in old grease but the fried green tomatoes were crisp, clean hot and delicious. The mashed potatoes and cream gravy were on point. The wait staff is the best and very friendly and take good care of you.

Well portioned, friendly service, fresh homade gravy you can eat with a spoon. Perfectly tender chicken fried steak, a man sized helping of mashed potatoes.

Walk inside, sit your bottom down, order chicken fried steak and don’t talk to anyone, especially the person you are with. Just eat. And keep eating. Until it is gone. Rinse and repeat. Mary’s is a classic Texas cafe that lives up to the hype. Not sure how or why it only gets 4.3 stars. Probably city folk asking for ranch dressing light. You’d be hard pressed to find a better chicken fried steak in all of beautiful Texas. Superb.

After looking at the reviews my family and I were excited to give this place a try. Unfortunately, it did not compare to the hype. The chicken fried steak and chicken fried chicken were overly greasy. My daughter ordered a shrimp cocktail, the shrimp literally fell apart when you picked it up....it was turning to actual mush. Fortunately when I brought this to our waitresses attention, she was kind enough to remove it from our ticket. Lots to choose from in the menu, and the chicken fried steak was actually recommended.... I'm sorry to say that it was probably one of the most poor chicken fried steaks I've ever eaten. YUCK!

Food is always delicious!😊 My Family & I have been eating here since I was very little! I grew up in Strawn amd this was the Go-to place almost everyday!Be prepared to come hungry, because you really get your money's worth here! My personal favorite is the Chicken strips! They are so Incredibly Tender & Delicious!

Took a 4 mile detour off of I-20 to get a "famous" chicken fried steak. Personally I wasn't crazy about the steak, but the servings were generous and I could not finish all my food even though I ordered the small. It's not fancy but the service was great.

Best in the state. Be careful. It’s massive and everything is home made

I’m sad to say it because I know a lot of people that live this place, but... At least 5/6 times I’ve been (ordered different stuff) the food was downright gross. Tasted freezer burnt then microwaved, was swimming in grease, just lacked flavor at all, or tasted eh, but made me sick later. And by no means am I a picky eater - I generally eat anything. Service is never satisfactory and it’s so loud in all the dining areas you can’t hear yourself think. I don’t think this place is under the same management it used to be or something. If you want home-cooking, go to Mae’s in Eastland or Sissy’s or Pam’s in Breckenridge — food a million times better than Mary’s every time you go.

Mary's is awesome! Great food, great staff, and Mary herself is an absolute sweetheart. The family has been dining there now for over 20 yrs.

Outstanding service and food. Although prices have been raised, due to beef pricing, the portions are really filling. Of course, the chicken fried steak was excellent. Make sure you order the small, as it is the size of most places regular order. Service was spot on and very helpful and attentive. A must place to eat if you're anywhere near.

This place was Packed and for good reason. I would pass on the fried zucchini BUT everything else was fantastic! I ordered chicken strips and each one was huge and cooked just right. We also ordered the chicken fried steak, Enormous, and it was perfect. Not too breaded or "wet". The mashed potatoes were the best ones we've eaten and that is not a small statement. Go visit and fill your bellies if you get the chance. Don't let an incredibly crowded parking lot deter you.

Mary's is a landmark restaurant in a small Texas town called Strawn. They're open 365 days a year, always good consistent food, and good service. They are famous for their 3 sizes of chicken fried steak. The small feeds most men (including me), is huge, and tastes great. The medium covers a plate, and the large is twice that. Really amazing. You'll see license plates from dozens of states on any given day. You will enjoy a visit to the country and Mary's.

Great place, huge portions, but the uncooked dessert knocked two stars in my rating! The coconut pie was extremely sweet and the crust was raw.

It's off the beaten path.. food was reasonably priced and generous portions. If you're looking for chicken fried steak or a 2 lb burger [takes about 40 minutes to cook] as well as homemade white gravy then you'll definitely enjoy Mary's. They have beer and sodas but no sweet tea gotta sweeten it yourself sorry. Their fried pies have a great light weight crust. Yum

Chicken fry is a must have!! Portions are very generous! So many great things to say, Mary's is a must have when visiting this area!

We drove an hour and half to get there so we didn’t mind waiting for our food for 30 min plus. My 2lb burger (regular) was very good and also tasted the best lightly battered chicken fried steak. Beer was served in ice cold glasses and servers were very attentive.

Veggie plate. Don’t show up hungry because you’re going to wait an hour before you get your food. Otherwise the food is great

The food was amazing! Best fried pickles I've ever had. My wife and I split a large chicken fried steak. And we still brought home 1/3 of it. The chicken-fried steak was so tender we didn't even need the knife to cut it.

Circumstances aligned and my opportunity to eat at Mary's Cafe was realised. The portions, service, and flavor were good. I hope my travels will avail me of a chance to return. I felt welcomed.

Delicious chicken fried steak! Made to order, with your choice of small, medium or large chicken fried steak & then choose- fries, baked potato or mashed potatoes (mashed potatoes have chives mixed in) cream gravy on the side & green salad w/choice of dressing. Minimal drinks to choose from, no sweet tea. There is a kid's menu as well for children 12 & under.

Food and staff were amazing. The experience was worth the trip.

If I could move Mary's closer to DFW, I absolutely would. Pictured is the large beef liver platter. On the other hand, if it was closer, I might have a cholesterol problem. It'd be worth it.

The chicken fried steak wasn't that great, stiff potatoes, and a tiny salad. Price was good. Loved their pie and crushed ice. The staff were really nice. But the steak wasn't great. We drove an hour to get there because of the reviews.

Good chicken fried steak just like my mama used to make. The gravy and french fries were to die for. Had heard about Mary's for years finally got to try it and will definitely be going back. It's worth the trip.

We drove 75 miles to try Mary's on a friend's suggestion. Was not very good. Service was slow. My cheeseburger was very dry and they forgot bacon so I had to ask...took awhile to come. We also had to ask for ketchup 3 times. My husband's gravy was too thick, it was the same thickness as the potatoes. They forgot his salad dressing. The server never came back to check on us and we finally had to go on a hunt to get our check and the checks of two other customers. The onion rings were very good. Would not go back, not worth the drive.

Absolutely amazing! The amount of food that you get is outrageous and the prices are great! Recommend to everyone!
